Commentary: Cause or Catalyst: The Interaction of Real World and Media Crime Models

A recent study by criminologist Ray Surette, Ph.D. shows that perception of the media as a beneficial source of criminal information and desire to use it as a learning tool are strongly predictive of copycat criminal behavior. Inclined individuals use violent media and news of crimes as inspiration and a teaching aid for their criminal behavior. Violent media was demonstrated to serve as a rudder for the criminally motivated, rather than a trigger. Dr. Welner reviews the study and provides analysis about its significance for forensic practitioners, corrections, and the entertainment industry.
