New York, NY - This Thursday at 630 PM, the New York City Bar Association's Science and the Law Committee welcomes Michael Welner, M.D., Chairman of The Forensic Panel, who unveils a variety of proposals to upgrade the quality of forensic evidence and testimony before the courts. "Meeting the Challenges of Forensic Promise" is a frank and provocative look at the systemic problems of forensic psychiatry and other forensic science practice, and covers areas vital to criminal, civil, family, and corporate litigation.
Engaging the ongoing deliberations of the Subcommittee on the Use and Misuse of Science, "Meeting the Challenges of Forensic Promise" speaks to the successes of forensic peer-review, the need for transparency in mental health examinations, approaches to enhancing the fitness of forensic professionals, quality control and why civil liability reform is essential, and approaches to funding better quality forensic science -- including public-private research partnerships. This talk will be a forward thinking but practical prescription relevant to attorneys, judges, and policymakers as they respond to many competing needs and with so much at stake.
The lecture will be presented in Everett's Room at the New York City Bar Association (42 West 44th Street, on the south side between 5th and 6th Aves). Attendance is open to the legal community and light refreshments are served. However, because seating is limited, please RSVP if you and colleagues wish to attend.
