Forensic psychiatrist Michael Welner, M.D. is the first choice of many of America’s most senior litigation attorneys who have the opportunity to choose one objective consultant to unearth pertinent evidence and assist their preparation for trial.

Dr. Welner's casework has spanned the range of criminal, civil, employment, and securities law, often focusing on frontier issues or highly complex litigation, including death penalty and multiple plaintiff class action cases. Through adherence to the science, dogged investigation, and painstaking interviewing, Dr. Welner has embodied diligence and independence as the staple of the forensic examination.

He is responsible for a number of groundbreaking innovations in forensic science. As founder and Chairman of The Forensic Panel, he devised and implemented the first peer-review protocols in the United States for forensic consultation. Under Dr. Welner's leadership, The Forensic Panel has achieved his vision of presenting "the Last Word" to retaining attorneys, opposing counsel, and the courts. This has consistently helped to resolve cases without appearance at trial.

Dr. Welner has pioneered the effort toward establishing a clinical and forensic standardization of evil acts. The Depravity Scale is a history and evidence-driven forensic instrument that will standardize the definition of "heinous," "atrocious," and "cruel" for purposes of fair and consistent application in criminal sentencing. The Depravity Standard research is reshaping ideas of culpability in science and law circles. Dr. Welner has also contributed groundbreaking research on drug-facilitated sex assault that has established a typology of such offenders.

In his New York City based clinical practice, Dr. Welner specializes in patients who fail to respond to treatment. Also Board Certified in Clinical Psychopharmacology and Disaster Medicine, Dr. Welner is on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Disaster Medicine.

Dr. Welner founded and served as editor-in-chief of The Forensic Echo, and originated the format of a cutting-edge, practitioner-written forensic journal that combined commentary with case and science updates with investigative reporting. Dr. Welner, currently a Special Consultant to ABC News, promotes the precise and substantive presentation of forensic issues to the public. He has been a frequent guest on CNN’s Larry King Live and is regularly cited nationally and internationally in the print and broadcast press on forensic issues of current cases.

He has lectured on numerous forensic and clinical issues as an invited speaker of, among others, the American Bar Association, American College of Legal Medicine, American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, International Bar Association, Pennsylvania and Texas State Senate, and various medical center Grand Rounds at venues around the world.
