Kai Stürmann, M.D., is an accomplished physician and teacher in Emergency Medicine. As Program Director for the Residency Program in Emergency Medicine at one of New York's finest hospitals, Beth Israel Medical Center, he is well-known for his ability to communicate complex matters to students while in high-pressure situations. This dedication to quality teaching makes Dr. Stürmann an effective leader and mentor, and he serves proudly as Associate Chair of the Emergency Department of Beth Israel Medical Center.

Dr. Stürmann's career in Emergency Medicine began as an attending physician in the Emergency Department of Beth Israel Medical Center in 1986. He was appointed Director of Medical Education for the department in 1988 and later that year, together with Elliot Smith, M.D., proposed a new residency training program to be based at Beth Israel Medical Center. The successful application founded the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Integrated Residency Program in Emergency Medicine and has since become one of the top EM training programs in the country. Since then, Dr. Stürmann has also developed two other programs - the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Program (AECOM) at Beth Israel for which he currently serves as Program Director, as well as a combined training program in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Dr. Stürmann's aptitude for explaining complex medical situations to both professional and non-professionals has served him well in the legal cases that he has contributed to as an independent expert. He regularly testifies in the field of Emergency Medicine for both plaintiff and defense. Before it was disbanded in 1991, he was a physician member of the New York State Supreme Court Malpractice Review Panel where he examined cases for standards of treatment and physician actions and ethics.

In his attending physician responsibilities at Beth Israel, Dr. Stürmann is a certified Sex Assualt Forensic Examiner and takes an active part in the hospital's Sexual Assault Survivor Examiner/Advocate Program.
