Dr. Joseph Merlino is the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Queens Hospital in New York. He recently assumed the post from his previous position, as Director of Ambulatory Psychiatry at world-renowned Bellevue Hospital, in New York City. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at New York University School of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at New York Medical College

Dr. Merlino was formerly Associate Director of Psychiatry at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he was Chairman of the Hospital Ethics Committee. At Lenox Hill, he was widely acknowledged for significant advancements in the quality of inpatient care and emergency services, and the development of a strong department of Psychiatry in a relatively brief period of time. Furthermore, Dr. Merlino was a physician ethicist at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, where he was an attending physician in the Departments of Community Medicine and Psychiatry.

In recent years, Dr. Merlino has emerged as leading practitioner wrestling with a variety of ethics issues in hospital and patient care. A sophisticated, pragmatic interdisciplinary thinker and practitioner, Dr. Merlino was awarded the Wholeness of Life Award 1998 by the Health Chaplaincy, Inc.

An expert in psychiatry and gender issues, Dr. Merlino is an editor of the Journal of Gay and Lesbian Psychotherapy. He also serves on the Committee on Human Sexuality for the prestigious Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry.

Dr. Merlino is also the Book Review Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. He is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association as well as the American Academy of Psychoanalysis. He currently is the President-elect of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry.

In addition to consulting and teaching, Dr. Merlino maintains a private treatment practice.
