President

John M. Oldham, M.D. is Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the prestigious Medical University of South Carolina. There, he leads ongoing projects ranging from basic neuroscience and brain imaging, to clinical psychopharmacology and the design of clinical service delivery systems.

The former Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute and Chief Medical Officer of the New York State Office of Mental Health. Dr. Oldham is recognized throughout the nation as a diligent clinician and excellent teacher. His leadership was pivotal to his roles as Vice Chairman and Acting Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University's College of Physicians.

Dr. Oldham has maintained a private practice for over 27 years. The breadth of his clinical activities has included a variety of supervisory responsibilities. He was Director of Psychiatric Emergency Services, and later, Director of Residency Training at Roosevelt Hospital.

His advocacy has made him a valued board member of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, The Project for Psychiatric Outreach to the Homeless, and the Mental Illness Foundation. As the Editor of Journal of Psychiatric Practice, Dr. Oldham has applied his expertise in distilling the science to an understandable, user-friendly discipline.

In his highly distinguished research career, Dr. Oldham is recognized as a world authority on personality disorders. His efforts have focused on clarifying personality disorder diagnosis, prevalence, and course across generations and life span.

Dr. Oldham is currently the Chairman of the American Psychiatric Association's Council on Quality Care, and he also chaired the APA's Work Group that developed a Practice Guideline for Borderline Personality Disorder.
