Ernesto Ferran, M.D.
Ernesto Ferran, M.D., a child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist and former Director of Psychiatry at Gouverneur Hospital in New York. Dr. Ferran has published on issues of teenage homelessness, poverty, and diversity issues that affect the workplace. Of special significance is Dr. Ferran’s extensive expertise in multicultural issues: He is the former Vice-President of Association of Hispanic Mental Health Professionals and has lectured extensively on culture and psychiatry.
As Executive Director of the New York University Student Health Center, Dr. Ferran had management responsibilities for its student’s medical, drug and alcohol education. He also oversaw the University’s faculty/staff assistance program and was deeply involved in suicide investigation and prevention. Formerly the Acting Director of Clinical Services at the NYU Child Study Center, Dr. Ferran also served as Clinical and Training Director of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Westchester County Medical Center.
Recognized by New York Magazine as one of New York’s Best Doctors, Dr. Ferran is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His experience in a variety of hospital settings is augmented by his experience with a variety of psychosocial rehabilitation settings. He has served on numerous boards and advisory groups which include: The New York State Hospital Review and Planning Council, serving as chair of its certificate of need process, The New York State Mental Health Services Council, serving as chair of its regulations committee, The New York State Task Force on Clinical Guidelines and Technology Assessment, The Board of Directors of the New York City Victims Service Agency, The Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association of New York and Bronx Counties, Housing Works and Covenant House.
Dr. Ferran is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Ferran’s extensive experience has given him special qualification in hospital and health care facility issues, workplace matters and psychiatric rehabilitation, student mental health needs, and suicide in young adults.
