Ryan D. Finkenbine, M.D.
Ryan D. Finkenbine, M.D. is a Professor and Chairman of the department of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at the University of Illinois at Peoria. He is also the director of the psychiatric residency program for the University of Illinois at Peoria’s School of Medicine.
Dr. Finkinbine is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry, Prior to his appointment in Illinois, Dr. Finkenbine was Director of the Forensic Psychiatry Division and the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at West Virginia University School of Medicine´s Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry. He was an adjunct Lecturer at the West Virginia College of Law, and served on the West Virginia Governors´ Sexually Violent Predator Task Force and on the West Virginia State Comprehensive Behavior Health Commission Work Group.
Since 1999, Dr. Finkenbine has been the Program Director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education´s Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship. He was President of the West Virginia State Psychiatric Association. Dr. Finkenbine is responsible for drafting legislation in West Virginia, which involves raising the qualifications to give expert testimony, including the requisite that experts be board certified in their respective area of expertise.
Nationally recognized for his innovative and successful educational programs, Dr. Finkenbine received the Best Teacher Award from the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law, and the Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award from West Virginia University.
He is the author of important articles on children who carry weapons to school, psychiatric and neurological characteristics of murder defendants referred for pretrial examinations, and psychopharmacological treatments.
Dr. Finkenbine has served as the staff psychiatrist is a variety of settings such as drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs, transitional living programs and adult general psychiatric hospitals. In recognition of his distinguishing career, Dr. Finkenbine was appointed by the Governor of West Virginia to the Sexually Violent Predator Management Task Force.
